Nowadays hirudotherapy is undergoing a new upturn. The use of leeches for the improvement of well-being is promoted, there are practically no diseases that would prevent the usage of leeches. It should be noted that a leech is a “one-time instrument”, and that completely eliminates the risk of infection. Our leeches are bred in the company “Lodeksa medical leeches” established in Lithuania. They are raised and bred under the strictest laboratory conditions. One leech is sold for 2,60 €. The company “Lodeksa medical leeches” employs experienced leech breeding specialists who have worked with the renowned Doctor of Biology Dalia Zapkuvienė who, in 2000, together with Dr. Laima Petrauskienė have prepared and published the monogram “Medical Leech. Anatomy, physiology, ecology”, which belongs to the most valuable publications of the Institute of Ecology. The medical leeches, bred in “Lodeksa medical leeches”, are widely used by hirudologist from Lithuania, England, Ireland, Austria, Switzerland, Slovakia, Spain, Germany, Poland, Finland, Czech Republic, Estonia, Latvia, Romania and Greece. The process of reproduction of medical leeches is complicated and long. They, like all other leeches, are hermaphrodites, but they are only cross-fertilized. The development of medical leeches is not immediate – the larvae that emerges from the egg remain in the cocoon where their metamorphosis occurs. When juveniles leave their cocoon, they are already very active, have a color typical of the species and can live independently.
